Polytechnics
Education offered at polytechnics is more practical and more focused on vocational skills than at universities. Bachelor degree programmes take about four years to complete. The polytechnics use the terms polytechnic or university of applied sciences when referring to themselves. This website uses the term polytechnic.
Most polytechnic students have either taken the matriculation examination (completed upper secondary school) or completed a minimum of three years at a vocational institution.
Student selection is generally based on grades and often an entrance exam.
The joint application system to polytechnics is a national procedure that Finnish polytechnics use when selecting new students. Joint application for Bachelor degree programmes conducted in English (other than Finnish or Swedish) is conducted through a separate joint application.
